Most Common Tennis Set Scores: How Often 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6 Happen
6-4 edges 6-3 as tennis's most common set score, but tiebreaks, bagels and fair odds look very different on the ATP and WTA tours.

Set betting and correct-score markets in tennis rest on one question: when a set ends, what does the scoreboard usually say? I took 286,208 completed sets from 114,493 tour-level ATP and WTA singles matches to find out. This sits alongside the rest of my tennis match analysis work, where I try to separate what feels likely from what actually happens.
The headline answer is that 6-4 wins narrowly, finishing 23.3% of sets, with 6-3 right behind at 22.4%. The tour matters more than most bettors assume, though. The men play far more tiebreaks, the women hand out far more bagels, and the player who loses the match tends to win their sets the hard way.
Period 16-4 and 6-3 together dominate how sets finish
The first chart puts the whole sample in one row of bars. 6-4 at 23.3% and 6-3 at 22.4% are close enough that I treat them as a pair: a single break of serve, held to the finish. Behind them come 6-2 at 16.1%, 7-6 at 14.8%, 6-1 at 10.5%, 7-5 at 9.1% and 6-0 at 3.5%.
286,208 sets. Advantage sets (8-6 or longer) and 13-12 sets make up the remaining 0.1%.

| Share of all completed sets by score, ATP and WTA | |
|---|---|
| 6-0 | 3.5% |
| 6-1 | 10.5% |
| 6-2 | 16.1% |
| 6-3 | 22.4% |
| 6-4 | 23.3% |
| 7-5 | 9.1% |
| 7-6 | 14.8% |
What strikes me is how little room is left at the edges. Advantage sets of 8-6 or longer, plus the 13-12 finals, account for just 0.1% between them. Any market built around marathon sets is pricing a curiosity rather than a pattern. In most sets, one break decides it, and that is the basic rhythm of tour tennis.
Period 2ATP tiebreaks and WTA bagels split the two tours
Split by tour and format, the picture changes shape. In ATP best-of-3 matches 17.9% of sets went 7-6, against 10.2% on the WTA. Serve holds more firmly on the men's side, so sets drift towards 6-6 more often. Taken together, 7-5 or 7-6 finished 26.5% of ATP sets and 19.8% of WTA sets.
Turn to the lopsided end and the WTA leads clearly. 6-0 sets were more than twice as common there, 5.3% against 2.5% for the ATP. WTA sets also finished 6-1 13.1% of the time and 6-2 18.6%, compared with 9.0% and 14.7% for the men.
Sets: 131,265 / 48,449 / 106,494.

| ATP best of 3 | ATP best of 5 | WTA best of 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6-0 | 2.4% | 2.7% | 5.3% |
| 6-1 | 8.9% | 9.2% | 13.1% |
| 6-2 | 14.5% | 15.2% | 18.6% |
| 6-3 | 22.8% | 22.9% | 21.8% |
| 6-4 | 24.5% | 24.3% | 21.3% |
| 7-5 | 9.0% | 8.6% | 9.6% |
| 7-6 | 17.9% | 16.7% | 10.2% |
Best of five barely moves the dial. ATP five-set matches produced 6-4 at 24.3%, 6-3 at 22.9% and 7-6 at 16.7%, close to the best-of-3 mix, so extra sets mean more chances but each set looks much the same. My usual surface caution applies: this sample blends clay, grass and hard courts, and I would expect a quick grass week to lean further towards tiebreaks than these averages show.
Period 3Match losers win their sets the tight way
This chart compares the sets taken by the eventual match winner with the sets the loser managed to win. The gap is clear at both ends. 19.9% of the loser's sets went 7-6, against 13.9% of the winner's, while only 1.7% of the loser's sets were 6-0, against 3.9% for the winner.
242,058 sets won by match winners, 44,150 by match losers.
View the data: sets won by the winner vs the loser
| Loser's sets | Winner's sets | |
|---|---|---|
| 6-0 | 1.7% | 3.9% |
| 6-1 | 7.6% | 11.0% |
| 6-2 | 11.9% | 16.9% |
| 6-3 | 24.2% | 22.1% |
| 6-4 | 24.6% | 23.0% |
| 7-5 | 10.0% | 9.0% |
| 7-6 | 19.9% | 13.9% |
That matches what I see on court. The weaker player on the day rarely runs away with a set. They scrap for it, often through a tiebreak, so if you are backing an underdog to take a set, the realistic route is a close one.
Period 4Fair odds for every set score on both tours
The table turns those frequencies into fair odds, which is simply one divided by the share, with no margin added. For an ATP set, 6-4 is the shortest at 4.09, 6-3 sits at 4.38, 7-6 at 5.69 and 6-0 out at 40.10. On the WTA, 6-3 is shortest at 4.60 and 6-4 is at 4.70, while 7-6 lengthens to 9.79 and 6-0 shortens to 18.92.
I use these as a reference line, not a price. A bookmaker's number has margin built in. A specific match between a big server and an elite returner should also move well away from the tour average.
| Set score | ATP share | ATP fair odds | WTA share | WTA fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6-0 | 2.5% | 40.10 | 5.3% | 18.92 |
| 6-1 | 9.0% | 11.17 | 13.1% | 7.62 |
| 6-2 | 14.7% | 6.82 | 18.6% | 5.37 |
| 6-3 | 22.8% | 4.38 | 21.8% | 4.60 |
| 6-4 | 24.4% | 4.09 | 21.3% | 4.70 |
| 7-5 | 8.9% | 11.23 | 9.6% | 10.45 |
| 7-6 | 17.6% | 5.69 | 10.2% | 9.79 |
ATP 179,714 sets, WTA 106,494 sets, all formats.
The main caveat is structural. These shares are counted per set, so long matches carry more weight than short ones, sets within the same match are not independent, and the final-set rules at the Slams changed during the period. Past frequencies describe the tour; they promise nothing about the next set.
Full-time verdict
Never carry one tiebreak price across both tours. Fair odds for a 7-6 set are 5.69 on the ATP but 9.79 on the WTA.
6-0 fair odds are 18.92 on the WTA against 40.10 on the ATP. A long bagel price in a women's mismatch deserves a second look.
When the match loser wins a set, 19.9% of those sets go 7-6 and only 1.7% are 6-0. If you fancy the outsider to nick a set, lean towards the close scores rather than the routs.
