Volleyball Correct Score Odds: Fair Set-Score Prices From Match Odds
A model study of indoor volleyball: start from the favourite's fair match price and read off what every correct set score should cost.

Model studyEvery number on this page is calculated from the rules of the sport and stated assumptions. These are not historical match results.
Every volleyball match ends in one of a handful of set scores, and the correct score market asks you to name the right one. This is a model study. I took the indoor best-of-five format with rally scoring and win-by-two sets, then calculated what each scoreline is worth once you know the favourite's fair match price.
The headline answer is that favourites win often but rarely cleanly. A side priced at 1.40 needs only 52.2% of rallies in the model, and its most likely result, 3-1, comes up 27.4% of the time. The sweep is fair at 4.12, while the underdog's best route, 2-3, is 7.52.
Period 1A 1.40 favourite prices 3-1 ahead of 3-0
This table starts from the favourite's fair match price and works back to the point-win rate the model needs to produce it. It then prices each winning scoreline. At 1.40 the favourite only has to take 52.2% of rallies, and the model's fair odds come out at 4.12 for 3-0, 3.65 for 3-1 and 5.07 for 3-2. It's the table I check before writing anything up for my today's volleyball tips page.
Read down the 3-0 column and the sweep shortens quickly, from 8.00 at a coin flip to 2.17 for a 1.10 favourite. The 3-2 column barely moves through the middle of the table, reading 5.28, 5.07, 4.99, 5.00 and 5.13 between 1.30 and 1.80, then drifts out to 7.49 at the top.
| Match odds | Points won | 3-0 | 3-1 | 3-2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.10 | 55.2% | 2.17 | 3.18 | 7.49 |
| 1.20 | 53.8% | 2.85 | 3.22 | 5.82 |
| 1.30 | 52.9% | 3.49 | 3.41 | 5.28 |
| 1.40 | 52.2% | 4.12 | 3.65 | 5.07 |
| 1.50 | 51.7% | 4.75 | 3.91 | 4.99 |
| 1.60 | 51.2% | 5.38 | 4.18 | 5.00 |
| 1.80 | 50.5% | 6.68 | 4.75 | 5.13 |
| 2.00 | 50.0% | 8.00 | 5.33 | 5.33 |
What strikes me is how little the underlying edge changes. Between 1.60 and 1.30 the implied point-win rate only moves from 51.2% to 52.9%, yet the fair 3-0 price falls from 5.38 to 3.49. A sliver of rally quality compounds over a whole match, so I never treat a short match price as a promise of a short match.
Period 2The underdog's most realistic win is almost always 2-3
Turn the same matches over and the underdog's scores tell the other half of the story. Against a 1.40 favourite the model prices 2-3 at 7.52, 1-3 at 10.04 and 0-3 at 18.80. The five-set win is the cheapest underdog route at every price, which matches how upsets usually feel courtside. The weaker side hangs on, steals a tight set or two and drags the match into a tie-break.
| Match odds | 2-3 | 1-3 | 0-3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.10 | 19.30 | 36.62 | 84.85 |
| 1.20 | 11.48 | 18.50 | 39.15 |
| 1.30 | 8.84 | 12.80 | 25.32 |
| 1.40 | 7.52 | 10.04 | 18.80 |
| 1.50 | 6.75 | 8.43 | 15.05 |
| 1.60 | 6.24 | 7.38 | 12.62 |
| 1.80 | 5.65 | 6.09 | 9.70 |
| 2.00 | 5.33 | 5.33 | 8.00 |
At 1.20 the 2-3 is already out at 11.48, and at 1.10 the underdog sweep sits at 84.85. If you see a big number on an outsider winning in straight sets, check it against these fair prices before assuming value. Set markets usually carry a heavier margin than the match line.
Period 3Sweeps rise and five-setters fade as the favourite shortens
The line chart shows the favourite's three winning scores as probabilities. The 3-0 line is the steep one: 12.5% at 2.00, 28.7% at 1.30 and 46.1% at 1.10. The 3-2 line moves the other way, holding at 19.5% at 1.80 and 19.7% at 1.40 before dropping to 13.4% at the short end. The 3-1 line is the steady middle and sits on top for most of the chart.
Near a coin flip the model makes 3-1 and 3-2 joint top results at 18.8% each, so an evenly matched game is more likely to run long than finish in three.

| 3-0 | 3-1 | 3-2 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.10 | 46.1% | 31.5% | 13.4% |
| 1.20 | 35.1% | 31.0% | 17.2% |
| 1.30 | 28.7% | 29.3% | 18.9% |
| 1.40 | 24.3% | 27.4% | 19.7% |
| 1.50 | 21.1% | 25.6% | 20.0% |
| 1.60 | 18.6% | 23.9% | 20.0% |
| 1.80 | 15.0% | 21.1% | 19.5% |
| 2.00 | 12.5% | 18.8% | 18.8% |
The main caveat is the model's big simplification: every rally is treated as independent, with the same bias regardless of score, server or set. Real matches don't behave like that. Rotation mismatches, a hot serving run, a change off the bench or fatigue in the fourth set all shift the rate, so treat these lines as a baseline rather than a record of past results.
Period 4Even the likeliest set score lands under half the time
The bars show the chance of the single most likely result at each price. For a 1.40 favourite that's 3-1 at 27.4%, and even for a 1.10 favourite, where 3-0 takes over, it's 46.1%. The model's top score is 3-1 from 1.30 outward and only flips to 3-0 at 1.20 and shorter.
Top score: 1.10 โ 3-0, 1.20 โ 3-0, 1.30 โ 3-1, 1.40 โ 3-1, 1.50 โ 3-1, 1.60 โ 3-1, 1.80 โ 3-1, 2.00 โ 3-1

| Model probability of the top set score at each match price | |
|---|---|
| 1.10 favourite | 46.1% |
| 1.20 favourite | 35.1% |
| 1.30 favourite | 29.3% |
| 1.40 favourite | 27.4% |
| 1.50 favourite | 25.6% |
| 1.60 favourite | 23.9% |
| 1.80 favourite | 21.1% |
| 2.00 favourite | 18.8% |
That's why I treat correct score as a pricing exercise, not a prediction. Picking the 'right' score still loses most of the time, so the only question that matters is whether the price on offer beats the fair number.
Full-time verdict
Convert the quoted match price to a fair one before reading these tables. A fair 1.40 favourite implies 52.2% of points and a fair 3-0 of 4.12, and the set-score market will carry more margin than that.
For mid-range favourites the model's 3-2 chance barely moves, at 19.5% for a 1.80 favourite and 19.7% for a 1.40 favourite. A favourite going the distance is a normal outcome, not a fluke.
If you fancy the outsider, the model's cheapest route is the five-set win. Against a 1.40 favourite that's 7.52 for 2-3 compared with 18.80 for 0-3.
Questions bettors ask
What are fair odds for a 3-0 in volleyball?
It depends on the match price. In this model a 1.40 favourite's fair 3-0 is 4.12. That shortens to 2.17 for a 1.10 favourite and drifts to 8.00 when the match is a coin flip at 2.00.
What is the most likely set score for a volleyball favourite?
The model makes it 3-1 at most prices, including for 1.60 and 1.40 favourites, and it only becomes 3-0 at 1.20 and shorter. Even then it's far from certain, landing 27.4% of the time for a 1.40 favourite.
How often does a volleyball favourite win 3-2?
The model gives a 1.40 favourite a 19.7% chance of a 3-2 win, which is fair odds of 5.07. For a heavy 1.10 favourite that drops to 13.4%.
