How Final Scores Are Built: The Half-Time Score Behind Each Result
I trace every common final score back to the break to show which results are built early, which are rescued late, and what that means for correct-score betting.

When I price a correct score, I am really asking how the match will unfold, not just where it will finish. This study takes 183,622 league matches from 22 European divisions, 2000/01-2025/26, and looks back from each final score to the half-time score that came before it. Every scoreline I consider for today's football tips gets this kind of check before I commit to it.
The headline answer is that comebacks are rare. Of 134,790 decided matches, 58.3% were won by the side ahead at half-time and only 6.2% by a side that trailed at the break. The detail sits inside individual scorelines, though. A 2-1 or a 3-2 hides far more drama than a 1-0, and a 1-1 draw is much less tidy than its scoreline suggests.
Period 1Most wins are built before the break
This chart splits every winning scoreline by where the winner stood at half-time. Clean-sheet wins cannot involve a comeback, so their only question is whether the lead came early or late. Of 2-0 home wins, 68.9% were already led at the break, and 3-0 home wins rise to 83.5%.
Once the loser scores, the picture opens up. 14.7% of 2-1 home wins were comebacks from 0-1 down, and the away version is slightly higher at 15.9% for 1-2 wins. At 3-2 and 2-3 the comeback share reaches 21.7% and 23.9%, roughly a fifth to a quarter of those matches.
183,622 matches; each row = all matches ending in that score.

| Winner led at HT | Level at HT | Winner trailed at HT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All wins (134,790) | 58.3% | 35.5% | 6.2% |
| 1-0 (home) | 43.3% | 56.7% | 0.0% |
| 2-0 (home) | 68.9% | 31.1% | 0.0% |
| 2-1 (home) | 46.2% | 39.1% | 14.7% |
| 3-0 (home) | 83.5% | 16.5% | 0.0% |
| 3-1 (home) | 63.8% | 27.8% | 8.5% |
| 3-2 (home) | 45.9% | 32.5% | 21.7% |
| 0-1 (away) | 42.8% | 57.2% | 0.0% |
| 0-2 (away) | 67.3% | 32.7% | 0.0% |
| 1-2 (away) | 45.6% | 38.5% | 15.9% |
| 1-3 (away) | 61.4% | 28.8% | 9.7% |
| 2-3 (away) | 46.8% | 29.2% | 23.9% |
For a bettor, this shows the high-scoring one-goal margins are where the swings live. If I fancy a side to come from behind, the narrow, open scorelines are where that story usually ends up.
Period 2The half-time score behind each common result
The table names the two most likely half-time scores for the 14 most frequent results. Some are almost binary. A final 1-0 was 0-0 at the break in 56.7% of 19,400 matches and already 1-0 in the other 43.3%, while a final 0-0 was, naturally, 0-0 at half-time every time.
Others spread wide. The most common half-time score behind a 2-1 home win is 1-0 at 27.6%, with 1-1 next at 22.6%. A 3-0 most often came from 1-0 at the break, at 42.8%, rather than from a two-goal cushion.
| Final score | Matches | Most common HT | Share | 2nd HT | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1 | 22,726 | 0-0 | 30.5% | 1-0 | 25.8% |
| 1-0 | 19,400 | 0-0 | 56.7% | 1-0 | 43.3% |
| 2-1 | 16,281 | 1-0 | 27.6% | 1-1 | 22.6% |
| 0-0 | 14,548 | 0-0 | 100.0% | - | - |
| 2-0 | 14,165 | 1-0 | 51.3% | 0-0 | 31.1% |
| 0-1 | 14,093 | 0-0 | 57.2% | 0-1 | 42.8% |
| 1-2 | 12,148 | 0-1 | 27.6% | 1-1 | 22.4% |
| 2-2 | 9,539 | 1-1 | 23.8% | 1-0 | 16.3% |
| 0-2 | 8,521 | 0-1 | 50.4% | 0-0 | 32.7% |
| 3-1 | 7,628 | 1-0 | 22.4% | 1-1 | 19.8% |
| 3-0 | 7,450 | 1-0 | 42.8% | 2-0 | 32.8% |
| 1-3 | 4,825 | 0-1 | 22.7% | 1-1 | 20.4% |
| 3-2 | 4,516 | 1-1 | 22.5% | 2-1 | 15.9% |
| 0-3 | 3,715 | 0-1 | 43.7% | 0-2 | 32.3% |
I use this table when I hold a correct-score position into half-time. It tells me whether the scoreline in front of me is a natural stepping stone to my pick or a detour.
Period 3Low scores settle early, bigger ones rarely do
Here I measure how often the half-time score was already the final score, meaning a goalless second half. The single-goal wins lead clearly: 43.3% of 1-0 home wins and 42.8% of 0-1 away wins were complete at the break. A 2-0 drops to 17.6%, and a 3-0 was already 3-0 at half-time in just 7.9% of 7,450 matches.
The 1-1 sits at 19.5%, well below the one-goal wins. A draw that feels settled at the interval still has plenty of time to change.
View the data: already settled at half-time
| Share of each final score that was already the score at the break | |
|---|---|
| 1-0 | 43.3% |
| 0-1 | 42.8% |
| 2-0 | 17.6% |
| 0-2 | 16.9% |
| 2-1 | 7.6% |
| 1-2 | 7.7% |
| 3-0 | 7.9% |
| 3-1 | 2.9% |
| 1-1 | 19.5% |
This is the clearest guide to when a live correct-score price might be too generous or too short. A 1-0 at half-time is a common finishing point; a 2-1 at half-time, at 7.6%, almost never is.
Period 4Score draws often hide a half-time leader
Draws look balanced on the final whistle, but this chart shows they often were not at the break. 50.0% of 1-1 draws had a leader at half-time, split between the home side at 25.8% and the away side at 24.2%. The most common half-time score behind a final 1-1 is still 0-0, at 30.5%.
As goals rise, the level share falls. 2-2 draws had a half-time leader in 64.3% of 9,539 matches, and 3-3 draws in 69.5% of 1,802.
View the data: how score draws were built
| Home led at HT | Level at HT | Away led at HT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1 (22,726) | 25.8% | 50.0% | 24.2% |
| 2-2 (9,539) | 32.4% | 35.7% | 31.9% |
| 3-3 (1,802) | 34.4% | 30.5% | 35.1% |
One caution I keep in mind: half-time is the only checkpoint in this data, so a side that led, fell behind and then won still counts as having led at the break. Rare scores like 3-3 also rest on smaller samples, so I treat those shares as rougher guides.
Full-time verdict
Of decided matches, 58.3% went to the side ahead at the break against 6.2% for the side behind. Treat a comeback pick as a long shot unless the price genuinely reflects that.
Around 43.3% of 1-0 home wins were already 1-0 at half-time. If a match is 1-0 at the break, the current score is a realistic finishing point, not just a staging post.
Comeback shares climb from 14.7% for 2-1 home wins to 21.7% for 3-2. If you expect a team to recover from behind, the higher-scoring narrow wins fit that story best.
