Most Common NFL Final Scores: The Top Scorelines in 7,276 Games
Across 7,276 NFL games, three-point finishes rule the exact-score board. Even the favourite scoreline lands fewer than 1 game in 50, so the price matters more than the pick.

Every Sunday someone asks me which exact score to back, as if one number keeps turning up. So I went through 7,276 NFL games, regular season and playoffs from 1999 to 2025, and counted every final. Those games produced 877 different final scores, which tells you how wide this market really is.
The headline answer is 23-20, which ended 139 games, or 1.9% of the sample. It sits just ahead of 20-17 and 27-24, and all three are three-point games. That is the field goal doing what it always does. If you follow my American football bets work, this is the base-rate file I check before I think about any correct-score price.
Period 1Three-point finishes own the top of the scoreboard
The bars show the 15 most common finals, winner first and counted whichever side won. The top three are a tight cluster: 23-20 at 1.9%, then 20-17 and 27-24 at 1.8% each. After that there is a clear step down to 24-17 at 1.3% and 27-20 at 1.1%, and then a long, flat shelf of scores near 0.9% and 0.8%.
The shape is the story. Field goals and touchdowns create key numbers, so a game that is level late tends to finish three apart, and 17, 20, 23, 24 and 27 keep recurring as totals for each side.

| 24-10 | 0.8% |
| 34-31 | 0.8% |
| 27-17 | 0.8% |
What I take from it: the top three are almost interchangeable on frequency. Choosing between 23-20 and 27-24 is really a call on the game's total, not some hidden edge in the score itself.
Period 2Fair odds for even the top scores are long
Turning frequency into price, 23-20 has fair decimal odds of 52.35, or +5135 in American odds. 20-17 comes in at 54.71 and 27-24 at 56.40. By the time you reach 23-17, the 12th most common score with 60 games, the fair price is out at 121.27.
These prices carry no bookmaker margin. A major bookmaker will build in its cut on top, so if a quoted price on 23-20 falls short of the fair number, you are paying for the privilege before kick-off.
| Final score | Games | Share | Fair decimal | Fair American |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 23-20 | 139 | 1.9% | 52.35 | +5135 |
| 20-17 | 133 | 1.8% | 54.71 | +5371 |
| 27-24 | 129 | 1.8% | 56.40 | +5540 |
| 24-17 | 91 | 1.3% | 79.96 | +7896 |
| 27-20 | 77 | 1.1% | 94.49 | +9349 |
| 13-10 | 66 | 0.9% | 110.24 | +10924 |
| 24-21 | 64 | 0.9% | 113.69 | +11269 |
| 16-13 | 64 | 0.9% | 113.69 | +11269 |
| 17-10 | 63 | 0.9% | 115.49 | +11449 |
| 20-13 | 63 | 0.9% | 115.49 | +11449 |
| 31-24 | 62 | 0.9% | 117.35 | +11635 |
| 23-17 | 60 | 0.8% | 121.27 | +12027 |
I use this table as a floor. If a price on one of these scores sits well below its fair figure and nothing about the matchup justifies that, I pass. The market is long by nature, and the margin only makes it longer.
Period 3The top ten scores cover only a small slice
This chart answers how much ground the popular scores actually cover. The single top score takes 1.9% of games. The top 10 together reach 12.2%, the top 20 reach 19.8%, the top 50 reach 34.2%, and you need the top 100 just to pass half of all games at 50.1%.
For a bettor that is a sobering curve. Even if you could back all ten favourite finals at once, most games would still land somewhere else.

| Share of all games covered by the most common scores | |
|---|---|
| Top 1 score | 1.9% |
| Top 5 scores | 7.8% |
| Top 10 scores | 12.2% |
| Top 20 scores | 19.8% |
| Top 50 scores | 34.2% |
| Top 100 scores | 50.1% |
This is why I never treat exact scores as a volume play. The distribution has a very long tail, and that tail is where most results end up.
Period 4Low-scoring finals have faded since the early era
The heatmap splits the top ten across three eras, with the break in 2015 marking the extra-point kick moving back. The leader shifts: 20-17 topped 1999-2005 at 2.1%, 23-20 led 2006-2014 at 2.3%, and 20-17 was back on top for 2015-2025 at 1.9%. 27-24 stays very steady throughout, at 1.7% early and 1.8% in the latest era.
The bigger movement is lower down. 13-10 ended 1.5% of games in the first era and has fallen away sharply since, while 16-13 and 17-10 have also thinned out. 27-20 has gone the other way and is more common recently.
Games per era: 1999-2005 1,845, 2006-2014 2,403, 2015-2025 3,028.
View the data: the top 10 scores across three eras
| 1999-2005 | 2006-2014 | 2015-2025 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23-20 | 1.7% | 2.3% | 1.8% |
| 20-17 | 2.1% | 1.5% | 1.9% |
| 27-24 | 1.7% | 1.7% | 1.8% |
| 24-17 | 1.5% | 1.3% | 1.1% |
| 27-20 | 0.8% | 0.9% | 1.4% |
| 13-10 | 1.5% | 1.1% | 0.4% |
| 24-21 | 1.0% | 1.0% | 0.7% |
| 16-13 | 1.4% | 0.8% | 0.6% |
| 17-10 | 1.4% | 0.8% | 0.6% |
| 20-13 | 0.8% | 1.0% | 0.8% |
My one real caveat sits here and across the whole file: these are base rates over all games, and individual shares are small enough that a few tenths of a point between eras can be normal noise. A specific matchup with a known spread and total has its own distribution, so use these figures as a starting point, not a forecast.
Full-time verdict
23-20, 20-17 and 27-24 are close to level on frequency, so pick between them using the game's expected total rather than the score's popularity.
Treat 52.35 on 23-20 and 54.71 on 20-17 as the no-margin floor; if a quoted price is shorter without a matchup reason, leave it.
The top 10 scores covered only 12.2% of games, so keep stakes small and never assume a cluster of popular finals protects you.
